West Kingsdown’s Briggs and Welsh into Quarters

West Kingsdown Boxing Club recently held the Southern Counties Development Finals at their club at the end of September.

They were delighted to host such a great event with 20 evenly matched bouts between clubs from all over Kent, Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex.
West Kingsdown entered three boxers into the competition with George Welsh getting a walkover through to the quarter finals. He will be joined by their most senior boxer in light-heavyweight Simon Briggs who was one of the star performers on the day.

Briggs forced three standing counts on his brave but outgunned opponent Luka Wojciech from Surbiton who had no answer to his South paw power punching, with the referee rightly calling a halt after the third count in the second round.

It wasn’t such good news for Harvey Martin who lost a close decision in a tough bout to Moulescombe’s Luke O’Brien. After three hard rounds, it really could have gone either way, but it was O’Brien who progressed to the quarter finals.

West Kingsdown’s head coach, Mickey Bowden, was understandably disappointed for Harvey who had trained so hard for this but said his time will come. The club look forward to Welsh and Briggs boxing in the National quarter finals on Saturday 12th October in Southampton and are optimistic about their chances.
