The Sevenoaks Powerchair Football team headed back to The Lee Westwood Sports Centre at Nottingham Trent University at the weekend knowing that three wins would earn them the Muscular Dystrophy UK Championship title.
Their first match of the weekend pitted them against Cheltenham South West All Stars. Third placed Cheltenham gave a good account of themselves keeping the score line to just 2-1 at halftime, however Sevenoaks turned the tap on in the second period to win 5-1, with the goals coming from Kyle Alexander (2), Myles Miller (2) and Harry Bestwick.
Next up was second placed Leeds PFC, Sevenoaks’ fierce rivals for the title. In a low scoring game, Sevenoaks outwitted their opponents with Miller forcing the ball over the line in the first half. Sevenoaks managed to hold on for what would turn out to be a crucial win in the championship chase.
The team had an early start on Sunday morning as they faced Middlesbrough Reserves PFC in their final league match of the campaign, and it was time to turn on the magic as Sevenoaks won the match comfortably, 8-1. Goals came from Alexander (2), Joshua Ivins (2), Miller (2), Bestwick and Dan Stevens.
Sevenoaks’ Coach, Adam McEvoy, was quite rightly excited and said of his team’s fantastic achievement: “It’s been a brilliant season for the team and I’m incredibly proud of their efforts.
“Being crowned champions and going the entire league season unbeaten is a huge credit to the lads.”
“One of our key players, Kyle, missed the first 9 games of the season, so the fact that the team pulled together to stay in the title hunt without him reflects how far they’ve come.”
“We know that the Premiership will be a step up in standard, there are some quality teams in the division so it’s up to me and the team to prepare for next season. Just as with the men’s first team league success – the hard work doesn’t stop!”
