Sports Council launch new application process to ease access to grants

The Sevenoaks District Sports Council (SDSC) is to undergo a major shift in the way it accepts applications from our up and coming sports talent across the district.

SDSC provides limited grants to individuals and clubs to further the development of their sport. Past recipients of these grants have included Lizzy Yarnold (Skeleton), Sam Billings (Cricket), George Torry (Hockey), Hollie Harrington (Lacrosse), Megan Beddoe (Fencing), Hugo Coquelin (Tennis), Ishwar Sharma (Yoga) Amanda Cunningham (Table Tennis) and Kelan Ryan (Parkour).

Meanwhile a number of local clubs have also benefitted from the council grants including West Kingsdown Boxing Club, Swanley Rugby Club, Westerham Cricket Club, Edenbridge Piranhas Swimming Club, Otford Netball Club and numerous local primary schools.

In the past, SDSC had requested all applicants to process a standard application form with a covering letter which would then be assessed by the council committee members. Whilst the latter part of this process will remain the same, new applicants will now simply provide a CV of themselves detailing their sporting history and ambitions for the future. The same will apply to sports clubs as well.

Whilst SDSC are not able to provide funding for every single applicant, they do stress that every person or club applying will receive the exact same treatment and that every manner of sport will be taken into consideration when agreeing the grants.

Grants can be used for new equipment or kit, or help towards travel costs or subsidise membership fees. SDSC do not decide on the purpose of the funding, the applicant does.

• Should you or your club wish to request funding from the SDSC, please compile a CV and send it the Chairman and Secretary, Edward Oatley MBE via email at janandedward@btinternet.com.
