Sevenoaks Suns’ unblemished campaign continues

Sevenoaks Suns remain second in the Championship standings, having recorded their 5th victory of a yet unblemished campaign with an impressive display away at Leicester Riders on Saturday to ensure their unbeaten record remained intact. The Suns came away from the Leicester Arena with an impressive 74-64 win.

The previous week saw the Suns with a thrilling 67-62 victory over Manchester Mystics at the Sennocke Centre. The hosts led by as many as 19 points before a dominant third quarter by the visitors saw Manchester take the lead. Renee Busch proved the spark, however, to get the Suns over the line – recording eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter.

It is a great start to the campaign for a team who last season completed a double, winning the WBBL Trophy and the WBBL Play-Offs, both of which were shown live on the BBC Red Button.

Sevenoaks Suns head coach Len Busch said in a recent interview that he doesn’t tell his teams to go out to win, winning is just a by-product of playing the game well and as part of the team.

He said: “I’ve never gone into a game saying that we have to win. We just go out and do what we’re supposed to do, and we get what we get. Which quite often is a win.”

When asked what his goals were for the forthcoming season he added: “To work really hard, to enjoy the whole process, to get better each time the players go out and to be able to look back and say we had a great season.”

This is a refreshing take on coaching and one that we at Sevenoaks Sports applaud. Far too many managers and coaches heap far too much pressure on their players to go out and win.
Len’s coaching approach obviously works and long may it continue to do so.

Meanwhile, the WBBL Cup quarter-finals have been drawn with Sevenoaks Suns travelling away to Nottingham Wildcats. Other matches include Manchester Mystics v Caledonia Pride,
Oaklands Wolves v Team Northumbria and Leicester Riders v Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters. Dates for these one-leg ties will be announced in due course.
