Sevenoaks Suns start their defence of WBBL Championship

Sevenoaks Suns, the reigning WBBL champions, got their title defence underway in dominant fashion as they beat Essex Rebels 79-46 in front of a big crowd at Essex Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.

They wasted little time as they finished the first quarter on a 13-2 run to establish a double-digit lead that they never relinquished, Cat Carr hitting a pair of first quarter triples before Frankie Wurtz capped that run with five straight points.

Carr and Judit Fritz then opened the scoring in an 8-2 push to start the second stanza, establishing a 30-10 lead as Suns held their hosts to just 17 first half points. There was no way back for Rebels, as Carr, the league’s reigning Molten WBBL Player of the Season, again finished with a monster double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds.

WBBL Championship: Essex Rebels 46 Sevenoaks Suns 79 (8-22, 17-39, 28-61) – Suns top scorers were Cat Carr 20, Julia Koppl 15, and Renee Busch 13.

This was Sevenoaks third game of the season after opening their campaign with two WBBL Cup matches in Group D. They lost their first game to a redesigned BA London Lions in a close fought contest, finally going down 81-76.

Sevenoaks then hosted Essex Rebels where they ran out clear winners in a 79-59 final score, however with a new cup format in place this season, they miss out on a semi-final spot and will have to wait another year befor contesting the WBBL Cup.

Sevenoaks will step out at the Surrey Sports Park this coming Saturday where they will play last seasons latecomers Newcastle Eagles. Newcastle beat Sevenoaks in the Playoff Finals in May, however they are yet to record a league victory this season.
