Last Tuesday evening, Sevenoaks Town travelled to the coast to face Bostik Premier side Folkestone Invicta in the Kent Senior Cup.
With many fixtures being played at the start of the season, the Kent Senior Cup is perhaps a little less important to clubs who are still playing in FA Cup qualifying rounds. However Sevenoaks were always on top in this tie and two goals from Luke Coleman, a former Folkestone striker, helped secure a decent 3-1 win away from home. Sevenoaks have been rewarded with a home tie against Ebbsfleet United who are currently sitting in sixth place in the Vanarama National League. The match has yet to be scheduled.
Saturday then saw Bedfont Sports FC visit Greatness Park in the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round. Coleman was again on target as his single goal saw them through to the First Qualifying Round where they will now face Ramsgate FC away on Saturday 8th September.
Coleman was picked ahead of Kenny Pogue, Sevenoaks’ top goal scorer from last season, for this fixture after his two goals in midweek, but also over concerns regarding Pogue’s fitness due to a slight groin injury.
Ben Bridle-Card was rewarded with the Sevenoaks Sports Man of the Match award after he kept his side in the match with some fantastic saves starting as early as the first minute. Bridle-Card paid for his heroics however, sustaining a dead leg which would keep him out of the Bank Holiday Monday fixture against Hastings United.
Manager Micky Collins was not particularly pleased with his teams performance however he said that being in the hat for the next round was still very important to the club.
The Emirates FA Cup prize money has been doubled this season, and thanks to their two wins in August, Sevenoaks have banked over £5,000. Win the tie at Ramsgate and they’ll add a further £6,000 to that total.
On Bank Holiday Monday, Sevenoaks faced Hastings, one of the hotly tipped teams to win the league title. In a very entertaining match that saw four goals before half time, Hastings were the eventually winners as they home from Greatness Park with a 3-2 win.
Pogue, who signed from Hastings in January, scored a brace as the teams went into the break at two a piece. However, Sevenoaks could not find the winner and were punished by the visitors in the 73rd minute. Sevenoaks went close a number of times in the dying minutes with Frankie Sawyer having the best effort one-on-one with the keeper.
Pogue won the Sevenoaks Sports Man of the Match for his two goals despite coming off late with his groin injury.
