Kirsch Cup winner is popular footballer

The Otford Sports Association comprises of representatives from all the sports clubs that use the village’s high street recreation ground and each year at the annual meeting of the Parish, it awards the Kirsch Cup to a promising young local sportsperson, or a person who has made a valuable contribution to any village recreational activity.

This year’s winner was seventeen year old Max Porter who was nominated by Otford United Football Club. Max has played for Otford United FC since 2017 and now plays for the U18’s who went unbeaten this season. Max has also been highly instrumental in aiding the start-up of the club’s young coaching school.

Tom Johnson, Vice Chairman and under-18’s manager at the club said: “Max was put forward by Otford United FC due to his involvement with our Coaching School which takes place on Saturday mornings in association with Sport4Schools Kent. He has been a big part of helping this grow from the start, with his enthusiasm and dedication to coaching young boys and girls who are taking their first steps in playing football. His attitude in not only the coaching school but his development as a player himself too, where he has been part of the Under 18s in an unbeaten season this year, makes him a worthy recipient of this award in my opinion. Fully deserved, well done Max”.

Stuart Cunningham, from Otford United FC Coaching School and Sport4Schools Kent, said: “Max has been supporting the Otford United FC Coaching School since early 2018, helping to develop young footballers between the ages of five to seven. Max has shown maturity way above his age and is always the first to arrive and to help set up. He can now easily set up and lead a session without any prompting or support and is very popular amongst parents and players alike. Max intends to take his first FA coaching certificate this season”.

Max commented: “I’m very proud to have received this award and to be a part of this great community club. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Otford United FC, whether it is coaching or playing, and I hope to stay here for many years to come. I would like to thank Tom Johnson and Stuart Cunningham who have both helped and supported me in my playing and coaching abilities”.

The runner up for the 2nd year running was sixteen year old Joe Crossley, who was nominated by Otford Cricket Club for his participation in Basketball. Joe has been his school’s skipper for the last three years and plays for Sevenoaks Suns U16’s and U18’s. He is also a good cricketer, but with basketball very much his forte. Joe broke into the Kent set-up last season and is going from strength to strength.
