Ide Hill up to third after scrappy game against Hawkinge Town

Ide Hill Football Club made it three wins on the spin in the Kent County Premier, by dispatching bottom club Hawkinge Town 6-2 in a scrappy game out on the coast, pushing the visitors up to third in the table.

Coming off the back of convincing wins against Peckham and Crockenhill over the Bank Holiday, Ide Hill saw the visit to Hawkinge as a chance to kick on from their unbeaten start and post more vital points on the board against a side who had failed to pick up a point thus far.

The visitors started with customary intensity and looked to prey on the frail confidence of the hosts, George Kensell nodding wide from a corner early on and Barry Ryan seeing a good effort saved when played through. They did take the lead on 10 minutes, Columb Grant lifting a lovely cut back to the penalty spot which the onrushing Craig Jackson dispatched at the second attempt.

Ide Hill were beginning to pose threats from all over the pitch and Jackson doubled his tally soon after, Grant again pulling back accurately when through on the left, Jackson rolled his man and curled into the bottom far corner for 2. Ide Hill sensed a chance to open the scoreline further, but the remainder of the half became scrappy and the visitor’s levels noticeably dropped, so much so that a soft penalty was conceded and put away, taking Ide Hill into the break only one up.

An angry team talk followed regarding lowered quality and standards and Ide Hill quickly came out in response. Grant added to his brace of assists with a brace of goals; his first put away from close range when a Ben Holder corner was helped on to him at the near post by Charlie James. Grant then slotted his third of the season when a Hawkinge clearance fell to him in the box and he made no mistake in turning the scoreline to 4-1.

A freak back pass own goal reduced the lead again on the hour, giving Hawkinge a hope of pulling back in to the game. However, this was quickly settled by George Kensell who bounded through the midfield and slotted beneath the keeper for 5. It was left to Callum Heath to provide the best goal of the day, played in on the left by a clever Shaun Boyle pass, he raced clear and bent a glorious shot in to the top corner to end the scoring.

Manager Paul Mcdonagh was quietly pleased with the day’s work: “It was scrappy in parts, but our quality told when it mattered. We gave them more of a look in than I’d have liked, but you have to be happy with 3 wins in a row at this level” and on his goalscorers “it was great to have the quality of Grant back in and amongst the goals, and Jackson controlled the game at important points and took his goals really well”

Ide Hill now have a break from the league having taken a strong 11 points from a possible 15 in their first campaign at this level. Next up, Welling park travel to Wrotham in the Inter Regional Cup on Saturday, where the Hill will be looking to put together some strong cup runs to augment an already promising start to the season.
