Brave Sevenoaks succumb to league Champions

Sevenoaks were soundly beaten by top of the league Surbiton, who were crowned Champions, on Sunday. In the penultimate game of the league season, Oaks travelled to Surrey for what was always going to be a tough examination.

Two goals in the opening 15 minutes gave Surbiton a 2-0 lead but Oaks responded well and earned a penalty corner midway through the half, but were unable to convert. The score stayed 2-0 until half time.

After the break, Oaks stayed in the game for the first 15 minutes, competing well with their opponents, but an unfortunate green card gave Surbiton two minutes of playing with an additional player and they capitalised scoring two quickfire goals to take the score to 4-0.

Surbiton then ran rampant with a further three goals in three minutes to leave the score at 7-0 with 10 minutes to go. To their credit Oaks never gave up and with five minutes to go they pulled a goal back from an Andrew Ross penalty corner to make it 7-1.

They were unfortunate not to add another shortly after when Tim Warrington, having been fouled several times, hit the outside of the post from a narrow angle with the goal gaping. Surbiton, however, had the last word when they were awarded a generous penalty stroke to allow them to take the final score to 8-1.

Oaks now have one final game remaining in the Premier Division as they face Beeston at Hollybush Lane in Sevenoaks on Sunday at 2.00pm. They’ll be hoping for a big crowd to cheer them on to give them the support they need to try and get their first three points of the season.
