Walthamstow Hall retain National Badminton title

Walthamstow Hall’s Year 10 badminton squad has won the English Schools Badminton National Championships for a second year in a row.

This time the players: Holly Williams, Rosie Williamson, Hannah Sarshar and Annabel Sykes (all aged 15) were competing in the U16 age group, so were facing opponents a year older than them.

The team had fought through county and regional stages of the competition to reach the finals, which were held at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes on Saturday 4th May.

The Walthamstow Hall girls won all four of their matches on the day. Their last match was against the top-seeded team from Chelmsford High School for Girls which they won with a convincing 4-1 score.

Walthamstow Hall’s Director of Sport, Miss Rachael Leggett praised the girls’ efforts: “This is an outstanding achievement for such a young team and throughout the competition every team member showed such passion, determination, great team spirit and were great ambassadors for the school.” Miss Leggett said special thanks had to go to Jo Muggeridge who had coached the girls to such an exceptional level.

As a result of their success, the girls have been selected by Badminton England to represent England in the World School Games next year in Greece.
