West Kingsdown staged their second show of the season, a dinner show “Christmas Cracker #2” at the Brands Hatch Mercure Hotel on Thursday 6th December. After a string of late pull outs they managed to put together nine bouts.
Sid Claudel who ditched his Muay Thai kicking pads to join his brother Xavier in a West Kingsdown vest had a hard introduction to the game with a unanimous points win over Poseidon’s Fatjon Daku. It was boxer versus puncher for three hard rounds with the immensely strong Daku pressing and Sid boxing very well on the move. A great last round sealed the win for Claudel and best boxer of the night award.
George Welsh having his first bout since the school boy finals was involved in another thrilling contest this time against Charlie Martin of Team Wiseman. Giving away age and experience George took the fight to Martin from the first bell however, Martin no mean performer himself, was equal to this with his sharp shooting counters. This was nip and tuck for three rounds with the hosts believing they had done enough after a big last round from Welsh. However, it was Martin who got home on a narrow split decision and the contest being voted best bout of the night.
Best technical bout of the evening was between the host’s Harvey Martin and Poseidon’s Kieron Ray. Again, the hosts thought they had done enough but it was Ray who won on another split decision. Martin’s cornerman thought a first round knockdown should have scored but was ruled as a slip.
The show closer for this sold out event saw Simon Briggs step up in class against All Star’s Ahmed Popoola. This light heavyweight bout ebbed and flowed for three rounds with Popoola enjoying a good second round which ultimately decided the contest in a close but unanimous decision in his favour.
West Kingsdown also had three supporting skills with ten year old Jesse Beaney opening the show, followed by Joe Lee and Lenny Ashley. All three performed very well and the future looks good for the club with this next crop of boxers coming through.
This was West Kingsdown’s fifth show in 14 months with the coaches very happy with all of their boxers’ performances and looking forward to their next event at their base, West Kingsdown Village Hall, on Saturday 16th February.
