St John’s Governor to cycle Vietnam and Cambodia

St John’s School Governor, and friend of Sevenoaks Sports magazine, Edward Oatley MBE, is taking on an extraordinary challenge to help raise funds for the lucky school.

On February 3rd he will be cycling across Vietnam and Cambodia and the motivation for this adventure is to raise funds for a new Mini Bus at St John’s in Sevenoaks.

The challenge is one of many set up by company Discovery Adventure Tours to assist individuals and charities to raise much needed funds for a variety of causes.

At nearly 500km, the challenge will be cycled over eight days on a route from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Edward, 72, will start the cycle ride in Vietnamese Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City and it will take him through the rice-paddies and waterways of the beautiful Mekong Delta into Cambodia. Cycling on through this friendly country towards one of the most impressive sights in Southeast Asia, the Royal Temples of Angkor Wat.

During the challenge the children at St John’s will be collectively cycling the same miles as Edward each day on a static bike. Then, shortly after Edwards return the families and teachers of St John’s will again be taking on another cycling challenge. They will be trying to collectively cycle as many miles as possible (and hopefully hitting Edwards distance) in a two-hour period at the Cyclopark in Gravesend.

The minibus will benefit the entire school community, each child will gain benefit from Edwards tremendous efforts.

The school mini bus will transport pupils to the Forest School, the riding stables, school trips and team challenges as well as sporting events to name but a few of its uses.
