Sevenoaks Town bounce back from midweek defeat

Perhaps the news of local girl Lizzy Yarnold retaining her Olympic Gold Medal had reached the changing room at the Bourne Stadium, as Sevenoaks Town banished their midweek blues in a display against Deal Town that puts them back on top of the league.

Erith Town had come away from Greatness Park on Tuesday night with a shock win, their second of the season in fact after dumping the hosts out of the cup as well. Surely manager Micky Collins wasn’t going to allow that to happen twice in a week? The Bourne Stadium was bathed in winter sunshine on Saturday afternoon with casting shadows stretching from the halfway line back to the edge of the penalty box.

Jason Thompson opened the scoring in the 25th minute after some fine footwork from the home side and this was shortly followed up by another Kenny Pogue finish on 35 minutes. Since arriving at Sevenoaks, Pogue has managed to score five goals in four matches but has yet to complete 90 minutes on the pitch.

The second half started as bright as the first and Deal never really put Sevenoaks under any real pressure. The scoreline remained at 2-0 until substitutes Robert Jones and Frankie Sawyer scored late in the game. Jones finding himself unmarked at the back post for a simple tap-in on 82 minutes and Sawyer wrapping things up in injury time.

The result puts Sevenoaks back at the top of the Southern Counties East Football League’s Premier Division on goal difference after Beckenham Town’s surprise loss at home to Tunbridge Wells, final score there was 2-3.
