Russell House gymnasts excel in Regional and National competitions

Russell House gymnasts have been building on the successes the school has seen in Regional and National competitions over the past four years.

Early in May, Russell House was represented at the British Schools Gymnastics Association’s National Tumbling finals held in Stoke-on-Trent.

To reach the Nationals, children qualify by coming first or second in their Regional championships and must be aged between eight and 11 in the year of the competition. Two gymnasts from each region compete throughout the day, earning points towards their region’s final placing. They performed three tumbles, all of which had to be different and meet the international tumbling criteria: a straight run, a twisting run and a free run.

The young Russell House gymnast, aged just seven, was competing in the U11 category alongside another athlete from the South East. After a stunning performance, he finished 10th in the country at his first National finals. The South East region finished in 5th place overall.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our pupil’s achievement,” said Craig McCarthy, Russell House headmaster. “He has laid down a marker in the U11 age group and still has three more years competing in that group so watch this space!”

Regional floor and vault competition
Also in May, 11 Russell House pupils competed in what was the final Regional gymnastics competition of the year, performing a set floor routine and two vaults. Three pupils were crowned Regional champions, winning gold medals. In addition, the school won two silver and two bronze medals.
