There was a very special presentation after matches and training at Sevenoaks Rugby Club on Sunday, when .GB Wheelchair Rugby (GBWR) player Johnny Coggan and GBWR Chairman Kevin Aitchison visited the Club to receive a £3,500 donation.
The money was raised earlier in the year; Friday 4th May, 2018 saw 240 Sevenoaks Rugby Club Junior and Minis players, along with their “support crew” of almost 400 coaches, parents and other family members, make their way to Norfolk for the Great Yarmouth Rugby Festival.
As well as providing the opportunity to play two days of fantastic rugby, the annual Tour raises money for worthwhile causes. This year’s nominated charity was GB Wheelchair Rugby, following their successful and awe-inspiring visit to Knole Paddock earlier in the season.
From the moment of departure from Sevenoaks, ‘Tour Rules’ were in force. Anyone breaching the rules (not wearing odd socks, pointing, not having the iconic orange Tour beanies on your person, to name but a few) was duly fined.
“Everyone entered into the spirit of the fundraising,” explains Karen Pearl of the Tour organising committee, “A group of ever-willing bucket-toting children were more than happy to fine parents, friends’ parents and best of all, their coaches, and this all helped to raise a staggering £3,500 for GBWR.”
“I know that I speak for all of the GB team when I say we are overwhelmed by the support of the Minis and Juniors from Sevenoaks. That is truly a fantastic sum and £3,000 pays for one of our 3-day home training camps, so it is a significant contribution – thank you!,” said Kevin.
