Lizzy Yarnold victory bus parade

Sevenoaks District’s Olympic champion, Lizzy Yarnold, made history in February when she became the first British athlete ever to successfully defend her Winter Olympic title.

The Skeleton sensation retained her Olympic Gold at the Korean Winter Games in Pyeong Chang after she won Gold at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in 2014.

Lizzy, who grew up in West Kingsdown in the Sevenoaks District, was the only Briton at this year’s Winter Olympics to clinch a gold medal.

To mark Lizzy’s record-breaking achievement, Sevenoaks District Council are organising an open-top bus tour in the spring.

The tour will take place on Wednesday 18 April.

The timings and stop-offs are still to be finalised but they will be published when they are known.

Lizzy is a talented all-round athlete who took up the Skeleton in 2011. It takes nerves of steel to take part in this sport as competitors ride a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down at speeds in excess of 80 miles an hour with no brakes!

To help Lizzy with the transition to the Skeleton, the Sevenoaks District Sport Council, funded by us, awarded her a grant. Further grant funding followed to support her at the 2014 and this year’s Winter Olympic Games.

District Olympian, Lizzy Yarnold, says: “It still hasn’t really sunk in that I am now a Double Olympic Champion! The last four years has been tough and at times I wasn’t sure if I would be able to defend my title, but it just shows you if you dream big and work hard then who knows what you can achieve. Thanks to everyone in the Sevenoaks District for all their support, it really means a lot to know you are cheering me on back home. I can’t wait to come and visit and show as many young people as possible my two Olympic Gold Medals – dreams can come true!”
