Holmesdale 1st XI return to winning ways in Canterbury

On a sunny, but breezy Saturday in Canterbury, Holmesdale firsts enjoyed a comfortable win against St. Lawrence & Highland Court. Holmesdale, hitting 308 for the loss of 5 wickets in their 50 overs, dismissed St. Lawrence for 182.

The win takes Holmesdale to second place in Division One of the Shepherd Neame Kent Cricket League, equal with Canterbury and only one point behind league leaders Folkestone.

Winning the toss, Holmesdale captain Luke Blackaby elected to bat. The Holmesdale innings started poorly with opener Dom May dismissed for just four in James Widerstrom’s first over.

However, centuries for Mark Epps (114) and Luke Blackaby (113) ably supported by Anthony Bissett (22) and Rupert Harbig (18) enabled Holmesdale to post a very competitive score of 308 on a pitch that favoured the slower bowlers and an outfield that was at times difficult for the fielders. With figures of 2 wickets for 47 off of his 7 overs, Charlie Nash was the pick of the St. Lawrence bowlers.

St. Lawrence openers made promising starts, scoring freely before being dismissed for 24 and 17 by seamers Ben East and Nick Miller. They were the only wickets to fall to the quickies, with spinners David Roffey, Dom May and Anthony Bissett taking control over a batting side falling increasingly behind the required run rate. Batting at 4, William Hilton top scored for St. Lawrence with 37 before being run out. Holmesdale’s fielding added to the pressure on the St. Lawrence batsman throughout their innings. Anthony Bissett finishing the game with the best figures of 4 wickets for 41 from his 9.2 overs and Dom May taking 2 wickets for 33 runs in his 10.
